The Stock Image Market: Alive and Kicking Despite AI's Rise
In a world where AI image generation has become increasingly sophisticated, one might assume that the stock image market would be on its deathbed. However, Freepik CEO Joaquín Cuenca has a different perspective, and his insights challenge our preconceived notions.
Freepik, a once-humble stock photo website, has evolved into a multifaceted tech giant. Alongside its AI image and video generators, the company has introduced Freepik Spaces, a collaborative platform that has expanded its reach beyond stock imagery.
But Has AI Truly Killed Stock Images?
At the Freepik Upscale Conf in Malaga, I had the opportunity to discuss this very question with Cuenca. With a hint of hope, I asked if AI had indeed put an end to the stock image era. His response was an emphatic no.
"There's still a space for stock images," Cuenca asserted. He explained that while new technologies often disrupt existing platforms, they don't necessarily render them obsolete. "There are people who prefer to create in a certain way, and that's perfectly valid," he added.
The Stability of Stock Images in a Changing Landscape
Despite Freepik's expansion into AI tools, the company's stock image business remains stable and even shows signs of growth. "Stock has not decreased for us," Cuenca revealed. "It's a nice, established business that we're proud of. We've helped countless people through our stock offerings."
The Convergence of Stock, AI, and Photo Editing
I wondered if there would be a greater integration of stock images, AI, and photo editing software in the future. Cuenca hinted at this possibility, stating, "We've made it easier for people to combine stock with AI, and many have embraced this approach."
Where AI Generation Falls Short
Cuenca also highlighted areas where stock images remain indispensable. "For certain purposes, like trade or travel, you need authentic images. It would be misleading to generate an image of a place like Malaga. You have to go there and capture it yourself."
The Future of Stock Images: A Stable Presence
In conclusion, Cuenca emphasized the stability of the stock image market, stating, "It has its own unique use cases that AI cannot displace. Predicting the future is complicated, but the reality today is that stock images are here to stay."
So, while AI continues to evolve and shape the creative industry, the stock image market remains a resilient and essential component of the digital landscape.
