Buddhist monk attacked in Chattogram

A Buddhist monk was attacked at a temple in the Baizid region of the town of Chattogram on Tuesday.

The monk is Gyan Jyoti Bhikkhu, 29, son of late Rupayan Chakma, from Borgapara under Sadar upazila in Khagrachhari, officials said.

Gyan Jyoti Bhikkhu is the director of the Jumma Chadigoan Buddhist Temple at Arefinnagar in the Bayezid region of Chattogram.

Gyan Jyoti Bhikkhu was attacked by three disbelievers early Tuesday at Jumma Chadigoan Buddhist Temple in Arefinnagar.

The disbelievers tried to hit him with sharp weapons, Gyan Jyoti Bhikkhu told New Age on Tuesday evening.

Locals rescued him and took him to Chattogram Medical College Hospital around 2:30 a.m., he said.

“I could not identify the attackers but they called each other by name Khalek, Manik and Emran. I don’t know why they attacked me, said the monk.

Gyan Jyoti Bhikkhu filed a complaint with Bayezid Police Station on Tuesday afternoon, Inspector (Investigation) Md Khairul Islam of Bayezid Police Station said.

He said they were investigating the incident.
