Local Hindu leaders claim the 20-year-old was killed in attacks on temples on Friday

The body of a Hindu man was found in a pond next to a temple in Noakhal on Saturday, a day after attacks on Durga Puja sites and Hindu homes left another dead.

The body of 20-year-old Pranto Das was found on Saturday morning in a pond next to the ISKCON temple in Chaumuhani in Begumganj Upazila.

Chairman of the Noakhali branch of the Council of Hindu, Buddhist and Christian Unity, Kishor Ray, claimed that Pranto was killed in the attacks on the temples on Friday.

Police said it was not clear he died from the violence on Friday.

The body showed signs of injuries, but the cause of death can only be confirmed after an autopsy, said additional police superintendent Md Shah Imran.

According to police, crowds marched near College Road and DB Road in Begumganj on Friday afternoon and ransacked the neighborhood.

A Hindu man, Jatan Kumar Saha, 42, died in the clash and a total of 17 people, including the Begumganj police commander, were injured in the attack, Additional SP Imran said on Friday.

“In this attack, one man died and a total of 18 people were injured, including the acting officer in charge of the Begumganj Kamruzzaman Shikdar police station,” he told local media.

There were sporadic attacks and vandalism starting at 2:15 p.m. Friday. At 5 p.m., the situation was under control.
