His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama addresses UC Santa Barbara at an event to bring hope and optimism

SANTA BARBARA, California, July 23, 2021 / PRNewswire / – This year, the Religious Studies Department at UC Santa Barbara is celebrating a milestone anniversary in the study of Tibetan Buddhism. Twenty years ago, the Duggan family had the honor of joining other community members, friends and alumni in funding the 14th Dalai Lama Chair in Tibetan Buddhism and Cultural Studies at UC Santa Barbara .

Marking the occasion and as the main event of UCSB’s Arts & Lectures 2021-2022 CREATING HOPE programming initiative, His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama joined the conversation with Pico Iyer, friend, observer and student of the Dalai Lama. This virtual event, organized by UC Santa Barbara with the aim of bringing hope and optimism, was broadcast around the world. A group of 25 people, including Bob duggan from Duggan Investments, were invited to join the participants’ zoom gallery.

In his own words, here is how His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama views Creating Hope:

“Hope is very much about compassion, love and kindness. That’s my point of view.

“Hope is very much linked to truth, to honesty.

“You yourself remain truthful, honest, these are the basis of our hope and our self-
confidence. I feel like this, ”said His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, on the theme of the evening, Creating Hope.

Very moved by the event, Mr. Duggan said:

“The gulf between the material world of science and the spiritual world of consciousness can be bridged by understanding a very exceptional word. Consciousness. Or con-science.

“Con is derived from Latin – it means with.

“Science is derived from French – scienta – it means to know, to know.

“Consciousness is something within you. It is the deepest well of knowledge you have about what is right and what is not – along with the urge to do the right thing. Consciousness is one. very personal thing.

“Supporting my alma mater and my religious studies was for me a personal matter and a choice of conscience. This week I am very happy to honor the 20e anniversary of this donation. I know that many students have benefited from their studies and are now having their own impact.

The Create Hope event has been a wonderful success for UCSB and a positive light as the world is enjoying it very much.
