Olympian and World Cup gold medalist Mairaj Ahmad Khan affirmed his class once again as he accelerated to a smart finish by winning gold in skeet in the Digvijay Singh Shotgun Championship at Dr Karni Singh Range, Tughlakabad, Sunday.

Mairaj, 46, beat Arjun Thakur 35-30 for the gold medal as he missed just one bird in the medal round. He had advanced to the semi-final with 27 hits, having reached the final with a modest score of 115, six points behind qualifying winner Gurjoat Khangura.

”The final and the semi-final are excellent. I will only work on qualifying for the next three months,” said Mairaj, understandably happy with how he competed despite not being at his best.

It was a similar case at the last World Cup in Changwon, when Mairaj had to win a shootout with four others after being tied on 119 for the final two spots, before chasing gold.

Anantjeet Singh Naruka, who shot 120 in qualifying, lost the shoot-off to Amrinder Singh Cheema for a spot in the medal round.

It was Raiza Dhillon who won the women’s and junior gold medals. Raiza beat qualifying winner Ganemat Sekhon 36-35 for women’s gold and beat Parinaaz Dhaliwal 33-32 for junior gold.

Darshna Rathore had a chance to fight for gold but missed the last two birds so had to settle for bronze.
