People urge Corpn. to speed up drainage works in market areas
With the delay in the completion of the underground sewerage network (UGSS) works in the Manikoondu area affecting motorists, pedestrians and traders, the public urged the Company to speed up and complete the works as soon as possible.
The Manikoondu district is one of the busiest areas of the city as there are large numbers of exhibition halls and textile shops, grocery stores and other commercial establishments. In addition, Pallipalayam vehicles pass through the RKV road to reach the Panneerselvam park junction. As a result, the roads are busy 24 hours a day. After the Company appointed contractor recently started working in the area, traffic was diverted. However, motorists and traders said the work was being done at a slow pace. “In addition to covering the extra distance to reach the destination, traffic congestion in the narrow streets is a major problem,” said P. Madhan Kumar of Kumalankuttai.
Traders and vendors also said their business had been affected for more than a week, with work not yet complete. “We see little business as the road is closed for construction,” said a local trader. “A pit has been dug, which makes it difficult for pedestrians to cross the road,” said V. Kamalam from Kallukadaimedu.
When contacted, the company commissioner Mr. Elangovan said The Hindu all utilities, water pipes, drainage channels, electric cables and telephone cables were present in the area and the work had to be carried out with care. In addition, digging rocks in the area took time, he added. He said the work had been sped up and the contractor was to complete the work within a week.
