Request from the Secretary General of the SLPP to the Maha Sangha of the country
Sri Lanka General Secretary Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Sagara Kariyawasam today urged the Venerable Maha Sangha to exercise patience for the sake of the country for a short while amid the prevailing situation in the ‘island.
Speaking at a press conference at the SLPP office, he asked Buddhist monks to light oil lamps around Bodhi trees and participate in Bodhi Poojas as was done in the past.
He made this observation in reference to the complaint of the Buddhist clergy regarding the increase in electricity tariffs for Buddhist temples and other religious places of worship.
He also said that when the IMF supports a country economically, the country must be subject to a series of conditions along with this, adding that the situation that has arisen in the country due to obtaining aid from the IMF can now be understood.
The MP further mentioned that the country and the people have to face some economic difficulties when we move to a debt-based economy without rebuilding a national economy in the country.
“I think electricity and water prices have gone up.”
MP Sagara Kariyawasam who mentioned that he had seen there was a lot of noise about the electricity tariff increase in recent days, further added that Venerable Maha Sangha also had a huge objection to the increase in the electricity tariff of the temples.
“We respectfully inform our Maha Sangha that this is not something the government is doing voluntarily. We may do Bodhi Poojas again in the near future with lights. Until then, we ask that you be patient for the good of the country. .
