As of Friday, September 30, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints had 282 temples worldwide — dedicated and operating temples, temples under construction or renovation, and announced temples still in the planning and design phase. .
The Church currently has 173 dedicated temples, five of which are being renovated; 53 temples under construction; and 56 temples announced and still in design.
And the Church News has six maps showing the location of each temple and its current condition.
The cards are divided into six geographical areas:
- United States and Canada
- Latin America including Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean and all of South America
- The Pacific, which includes Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific Islands
In addition, the color of each location point denotes the current or upcoming status of the temple – dedicated and operational or scheduled for inauguration, under renovation or scheduled for renovation, under construction or scheduled for inauguration, or announced and in planning.
Most maps reflect temples according to the 23 designated areas of the Church—first established in 1984 to direct work in geographic locations of the worldwide Church.
Three notable exceptions vary from Church Maps and Zones, which were established beginning in 1984 to direct work in worldwide Church geographic locations.
- Due to their location in the Pacific Ocean, Laie Hawaii and Kona Hawaii temples are shown on the Asia map rather than the United States map.
- The Praia Cape Verde temple is depicted off the coast of West Africa, but the temple belongs to the northern area of Europe.
- And the announced Dubai Temple in the United Arab Emirates falls under the supervision of the Middle East/North Africa region of the Church, but it is shown on the map of Asia.
Beginning in 1984, regions were established to direct the work in geographic locations of the worldwide church.
Additional temples may be announced at the next general conference in October 2022. In each general conference he has presided over since becoming President of the Church in January 2018, President Russell M. Nelson has announced new temple locations – he announced 100 in total so far.
