A police officer said Swetha, from Madras Christian College, was on her way to the train station to return to her home in Chromepet when Ramachandran accosted her.

The officer said during initial questioning, Ramachandran, working at a private company in Maraimalai Nagar, told police that he and Swetha became friends while they were traveling on the commuter train. But a few weeks ago, the girl stopped meeting him and did not answer his phone calls. On Thursday, as they were both arguing, he pulled out the knife and stabbed her.

He was arrested and admitted to hospital.
