TREC-STEP wins ‘Smart Incubator’ award
TREC-STEP was awarded “Smart Incubator of the Year 2022” by India Smart Grid Forum (ISGF), a Ministry of Energy, Indian Government’s Public-Private Partnership Forum, in recognition of its incubation performance companies, its innovation and its societal impact, in particular for contributions to the energy sector.
RMP Jawahar, Executive Director of TREC-STEP, received the award at a ceremony hosted by ISGF in New Delhi earlier this month as part of India Smart Utility Week 2022 and the eighth conference and international exhibition on smart energy and smart mobility.
Policymakers, leading national and international experts, entrepreneurs and industry members from the energy and smart grid sector, academics and young technocrats took part in the meeting.
TREC-STEP was chosen for the prestigious award from over 150 applying institutions across India, through a rigorous three-stage selection process – detailed application, pitch presentation and public voting of the finalists. The jury was made up of experts, former secretaries, angel investors and other personalities from the electricity sector.
The TREC-STEP Smart Incubator Awards are in the Platinum category.
TREC-STEP, which continuously contributes to the energy sector in the region in partnership with national and international development organizations such as the European Union, UNIDO, the World Bank and the division of the British Council, has designed a unique project involving the installation of Smart Grids in two harsh rural energy island environments in the EU and in the hills of Pachamalai in Tamil Nadu.
The project, titled ‘Tandem grids’, envisages implementation in Granada in Spain, Crete in Greece and the remote mountainous region of Pachaimalai in Tamil Nadu. The project will demonstrate the impact of renewable energy sources in ensuring a cost-effective solution for reliable power supply for local residents, creating vibrant renewable energy communities, Mr. Jawahar said.
TREC-STEP has partnered with two IITs, TANGEDCO, Anna University, TEDA- Tamil Nadu, TERI and five Smart Grid Start-ups from TREC-STEP on the Indian side to foster smart energy. On the European side, it has associated with 14 partners such as RINA Consulting SpA, Italy, CARTIF Foundation, HYPERTECH (Chaipertek), Greece, European Association for Energy Storage – EASE, Belgium, Eindhoven University of Technology – TUE , and The Netherlands.
